Annual profection years represent the themes of each year of your life. It is a Hellenistic approach to understanding your life through Astrology.

A little tool to help you fully understand, remember what you were like and experiencing in your life during the ages mentioned. That will give you insight into the years ahead.
1st House Profection Year -

sense of self, ego, physical appearance, overall personality
During a 1st house profection year, your main theme for the year will be independence and identity. To make the most of these years, you need to focus on yourself. Changes to your appearance, getting rid of old clothes and bad habits, and taking what you've learned from the previous year [12th house - mental state, introspection] and turn it into real world action. By your 1st house year, you should have learned many valuable lessons of self control, controlling your emotions, and are likely coming out of a period of isolation. Ideally, in your 1st house year you will be ready to make real changes in your life. Periods of depression usually ease into the 1st year and feelings of refreshment come back.
This is the time to tie up loose ends, finally cut your hair or get some life back into your skin, start new journals, dye or cut your hair, start working out regularly, start a routine of caring for yourself, eating better, whatever it takes to merge mental wellness with physical wellness. Set yourself up for success, to feel good, look good and be healthy, so that you are prepared for the next year, which is the year of finances and morals.
For example, think about yourself at these ages. Birth, you are finally a person in this world, with a name, a life, an identity. At age 12, you start to branch out into your own interests and take notice of other peoples interests, rather than what has been provided to you as a pre teen and child. At age 24, you are moving away from that fresh "adult" feeling, the cringe and embarrassment of being alive/teenager starts to finally ware off, realizations of actual adulthood start to set in, you're moving away from hive mind of colleged aged, and blossoming into true adulthood.
2nd House Profection Year -

values, spending habits, living conditions, income, property, self worth, morals, taste/aesthetics, etc.
During your 2nd house year, the focal point will be how you make and spend money, and your moral compass. You will be faced with situations that make you re-address what really matters to you, what ground do you stand on, what makes you - you. The problems that come up in your life during this year will test what you're willing to do for money, for love, or to get the things that you want. This is a phase where you are really thinking about success and your career, if you're making enough money, if you're happy, if you're proud. Now is the time to change careers, ask for a raise, work harder, switch paths entirely. This is also a time period where you might suddenly realize that you don't enjoy the things that you used to. For example, if you play video games maybe you become bored of them, if you dress a certain aesthetic you start to feel tired or embarrassed of it - these are the ages where you start to dress more mature, eventually classy or just different. You start to feel like morally and how you present yourself don't fit your new attitude that you achieved in the previous 1st house year. You've likely adopted new traits, habits, appearance, or idea of yourself, that you must put forward if you expect people to treat you accordingly - i.e. morals, values, self worth.
At age 13, you start to become more aware of how people look, of how you look. You start to want to put together outfits or have certain hair cuts, you notice how other people your age dress and start to become part of the community of your peers. At age 25, this is when most people have started to graduate and move on to their careers, or to move on from the college aged partying and get more serious. They start to think more long term and what they want [morals/values] in life. So on, and so forth.
3rd House Profection Year -

communication, neighborhood, where you live, thought and speech patterns
During the 3rd house profection year, the focal point is how you communicate and express yourself, and how you control/navigate your thoughts. At age 2, you start to communicate and use sentence structure. At 14, you struggle with expressing yourself and understanding your feelings, either going through puberty or shortly post puberty. While still in grade school, these could be the year that you focus the most or decide you ultimately are giving up on school. The idea is that there is a pivotal moment regardless of which direction it takes you.
These years you will run into many miscommunications and misunderstandings. You will learn to either speak up for yourself or learn that saying less will get you further. Either way, the lessons revolve around how you communicate with others, you adapt new ways of speaking, start to understand how your words influence those around you. You will also be faced with controlling your thoughts. If you speak before thinking, these will be big years for you with lessons of burning bridges. If you let unhealthy thought patterns control your life or talk to yourself negatively, you eventually burn out or completely break yourself down during these periods. Breakthroughs and epiphanies will happen these years as you inevitably learn better ways to express yourself, to get people to understand you, and how to focus your mind on more beneficial things.
Now while the 3rd house doesn't rule the actual house you live in, it rules the neighborhood and community that you live in. During these years you can see drastic changes to your immediate surroundings. Things like flooding or a huge lot by your house being built with years worth of construction ahead, an extremely difficult neighbor moves in above you, or a business in the neighborhood shuts down that drastically changes the economy in the neighborhood, that sort of thing. You can see this result in your decision to move, leading you to your 4th house year.
The type of moving related to the 3rd house is more like you relocated counties or states, where as the 4th house would be moving across town, and then the 9th house moving across the country or out of the country.
If you are a compulsive liar, this is not a good year for you. You will find yourself deep into layers of deception unable to get yourself out. You will experience many embarrassing moments where your lies are exposed with no way to cover yourself.
These are the years that people struggle with focus and understanding what their goals are. They feel seemingly directionless or stagnant. This is also a time period where community is crucial, spend more time with casual acquaintances, neighbors, grandparents, siblings, etc.
4th House Profection Year -

childhood, upbringing, immediate family, your home & immediate environment
During these years, you will be focus on your living situation. This is a good time to rearrange your space, do serious deep cleaning and throw away old clothes and furniture. This is also a great time to move entirely.
For some, if you had a difficult childhood or don't have a great relationship with your family, these are the years that those relationships are really challenged. Resurfaced feelings or memories, rehashing of old fights, old issues coming up again, are all likely.
For the rest of you, these years are when you tend to get more serious about "home", whether that means thinking about buying a house or moving, but the stability and energy that having a home or place to live brings you. You see the value in your living space. People are more likely to keep their spaces clean during these years or regain emphasis of importance on how your immediate environment effects your mind.
You could think about your future and your foundation and take steps to lay the ground work of establishing stability.
Since the 4th house is ruled by the Moon, these years revolve around nourishment and home, but also your emotions. If you have a water Moon, these periods can be a little more emotional for you, fire Moons more angry, air Moons more erratic, and earth Moons more grounded.
5th House Profection Year -

recreation, short term dating, hobbies, children
During your 5th house years, you are, of course, more likely to be thinking about having children. These years are more light hearted, and you are more focused on having fun. The idea is that once you've established some stability in your 4th house year, to let loose into your 5th house year. You are more likely to want to date around, find excitement in new dating adventures or new experiences. Trying new things is what will make you feel most fulfilled Anything that tries to ground you or challenge your freedom, isn't met welcomingly. There are up's and down's to every placement and transit. The down side to this one is that you could destroy your progress or future by having too much fun or too much self indulgence.
6th House Profection Year -

co-workers, work environment, pets, health and wellness
The 6th house rules our habits, routines, work environment, physical health, co workers and pets. During this time you are more likely to have health issues or pay extra attention to your health. Make the most of it by maximizing your physical ability and quitting things that are making you chronically ill. These are the years to get your semi annual check up's or get an extra look or take care of an ailment you've been putting off.
Your work environment is another focal point, you might feel extra willing to make your work environment a more easy going place. Things like decorating or buying little things that your team needs to make the whole experience slightly better are common. You care more about co-worker situations and creating a welcoming environment. Remain out of gossip and problems to ensure this is a positive year. Getting involved in work place relationships is dangerous during these years.
Of course, there is the obvious encouragement that if you want to commit to getting a pet, these years support life long bonds and are the most beneficial years to adopt an animal into your life.
7th House Profection Year -

love relationships, close friendships, people you consider family that aren't, your immediate surrounding support system
This is a tricky one. You are more likely to meet people who remain in your life for extended periods of time during this transit. However, the nature of those relationships is not up to the profection year. You could still meet someone who you get into a toxic and unhealthy relationship with that you stay with for a decade, and hence, complete the cycle - just as much as you could meet the love of your life or a friend that you stay close with for the remainder of your years. The focus is relationships, both the good and the bad. The relationships you do have can suffer direction-changing worthy situations. Whether that strengthens the relationship entirely and shaping it for years to come, or ending something you thought was stable and being blind sided. It is common in these years to experience periods of loneliness and isolation. Profection years are ironically "perfection" years. You are strengthening the areas of your life related to the house for that year. Sometimes, this means that you must be alone for extended periods of time, to relearn your own boundaries and wants/needs. To realize what kind of energy you want consistently in your life. What you're willing to tolerate or what you need to leave behind. These are bittersweet years. The people that you meet or leave behind in these years remain in your memory for the rest of your life.
8th House Profection Year -

drugs, sex, secrets, other people's resources/money/energy, lust, darkness, conspiracies, taboo
These years are full of transformation. Their focal points are ego deaths, mortality, sex, money, power, drugs, endings, hiding, dramatic loss/gain - sometimes both within the same year. These years are full of controversy and troublesome situations. Even impending loss that you know is coming, can blindside you and end in a totally opposite way than the obvious anticipated reason. Endings and beginnings, bittersweet, dark times. It is common to hit rock bottom during these years, which ironic coming after a 7th house year. You could feel isolated or like your support system has disappeared. The 8th house is opposite the 2nd house -- your morality and values, you are now faced with challenges that force you into new ways of thinking and being, where as the moral changes you face during the 2nd house year are willingly and by your own volition. 8th house morality changes are something that comes unexpectedly, or things that you are in denial about finally come around.
If you did meet a new lover during your 7th house year, this is usually where things get tough. You can start to fight or see new sides of each other that make you question the relationship. I a way, it is fun if your life events time out this way, because you can laugh at the situation and know it is a test. If you can persevere through an 8th house year with this person, it is more likely to last. However, existing relationships can suffer during this year because you are more likely to explore the darker sides of yourself and other people, get caught up in keeping secrets, or naturally just become more secretive out of no where even if you aren't necessarily doing something wrong.
You will be more inclined to try experimental drugs, or do something crazy that is outside of your normal behavior. This can be a good thing in some cases because not everything that is considered taboo by standard, is a bad thing. Just be weary of newfound addictions or obsessions during these years.
9th House Profection Year -

law, long distance travels, higher education
During a 9th house profection year, you are focused on learning, order, and routine. This energy encourages you to branch out intellectually, to pursue matters with your whole heart. People often undergo religious epiphanies or coming to God moments under this transit. And vice versa, if you grew up religious then these are the years that you are more likely to question your fate -- or question your faith regardless of belief system. To question the way of the world, to pay more attention to the way that things work and the Why's of every scenario. You want to learn, grown, see new places or things. The 9th house is the realm of Jupiter, and it encourages you to travel overseas and far away places, to expand beyond the things that you think you know and systems that you've operated on your whole life.
However, that being said, not everything that you learn during these years or truths that you find along the way, aren't all true or beneficial. It is more likely to fall into traps and false gurus, get sucked into cults. You are more willing to adjust your beliefs during this time, which makes you vulnerable to frauds, scams, and pseudo intellectuals trying to sell you an idea. Remain aware of your own thoughts and opinions, do your own research on all topics, don't take anything at face value.
10th House Profection Year -

career, reputation, public image
During a 10th house profection year, your main focal points are your career and how you come off to others. Changes in career path, receiting from the public eye or vice versa -- emerging in to the public eye, re-doing all public profiles or cleaning up public digital footprint, are all themes. You will feel more driven to be successful, making necessary adjustments to your work life, leaving behind places that don't value you and moving on to fresher avenues.
11th House Profection Year -

hopes, dreams, friend groups, goals, acquaintances
11th house year focal points are your friends/acquaintances, networking, goals, hopes, dreams, joining new groups/clubs/friend groups, meeting new people, usually good luck throughout the year. Due to the influence of Neptune this could make these years breeze by unnoticed or make them hard to remember. Neptune clouds our reality. Typically now is a good time to take any opportunity that you're given, as it will likely turn out successful. Do the unexpected and take risks and see where it takes you.
12th House Profection Year -

isolation, mental health, dream state, sleeping patterns, imprisonment, hidden, secrets
The 12th house years are considered the most difficult. We feel lost, isolated from others, out of touch with ourselves. It takes a complete re-work of the mental state through these years. A common and quirky theme I have noticed, is to look back at pictures of yourself during these years, you will often find yourself hiding your face either intentionally or unintentionally. We naturally want to isolate ourselves, lose interest in going out, walk back out extroverted sides. We subconsciously recognize that we need to reflect, to change within, to get to know ourselves. Sometimes, this is hard, because its hard to face your flaws. But these years are crucial to growing as a person. Periods of depression, literally going to prison, and circumstances forcing you to be alone, are more likely to occur.
